The Cat That Changed it All
The tiny cat comes out of the little box, she's less than 2 pounds and is as orange as the setting sun and as black, as night combined, she's hiding in and slowly makes her way to me and my parents.
She's adorable.
I’m about 14 during freshman year of high school, never in my life have I thought I would get a new animal to call mine. I never have thought about having a pet since my fat goldfish died of being overfed since my mom thought he was anorexic. I know that sounds weird but here I am thinking about a fat dead fish while this cute cat is walking around.
“This kitten is called Samantha,” The lady said
“She's only about a year old but has been through a lot”
“What do you mean been she's been through a lot?” I asked
“Well she came from an abusive home in the south, we generally don't get a lot of cats at this DOG adoption center,” The woman said
I know this sounds heartless but I kinda chuckled at the fact there was a cat at a dog shelter. It made no sense but I’m happy there was a tiny kitten there.
“skREE can we please get the kitty! I promise I'll take care of it and clean its poop or pee when it goes outside” Tristan said
“You’re stupid if you think a cat pees outside, “ I said
But literally, I still laugh at how a cat can be at a dog shelter I don’t know why. I mean I bet you have some time in the past learned something about an animal that made you puzzled. Back to the cat, she was named Samantha and was only about a year old. She did actually come from a state in the south where she was bred in bunches and the owner tried to farm animals to sell and make money while having them in bad conditions. I hope whatever asshole did that gets put in jail because that's horrible.
“Well I bet you can find a way to give her a good home,” The lady said
“I’ll talk to my husband at home about it thanks for your time,” My mom said
I walk away from the cat and the cat just looks at me and sits by the door. It made me feel so bad we couldn't take her home since it looked like she wanted to leave.
Now was the hard part.
Deciding if we wanted this cat at home.
My mom took this way too serious, she organized a “meeting” at 8 pm in the dining room and she said we need to go if we wanted this cat.
“We are here to discuss getting that cute kitty you all want,” She said
“Why are we sitting in these chairs looking like businessmen,” I said
“Well this would be an awkward time to tell you but we were going to surprise you with a vacation to Washington DC, but since you two saw that cat it seems like that's all you want. It’s either vacation or the cat. I really want the vacation but we want you to choose” My mom said
I'm sitting there looking like I’m making a college decision but I'm literally just deciding to get a cat or not. I don’t know what would you even do in this situation? One you can go on an amazing vacation and see things you never would but one is a cute orange and black cat who needs a home.
You know I wanted that cat.
“I want that cat, Tristan your opinion is void since your 10 and won’t even take care of it” I said
I kinda feel bad for being so mean to my brother but yet again he's my brother.
“That's mean but I want the cat too,” Tristan said
“It's settled, let's look on the website to get this cat you're all dying for it's not like I wanted to see the white house,” My mom said
“Stop being petty you’ll end up loving the little monster,” I said
We go to the website and look around since we were still thinking a dog may be in the question. There’s a section on the website called “other animals”. How rude of them to call my future cat and “other animal”, but anyways my mom clicked on the cat named Samantha, there was no picture for her since the lady told us she literally got there the day before we came, which is why she was in the nurse's room in a little box.
“Are you going to be responsible for the cat and clean its litter box and feed it?” My mom said.
“YES PLEASE I WANT THE CAT” I yelled like a maniac.
“Chill out ok I will fill the adoption form now, we will go to get her soon,” She said
I’m so ecstatic for finally getting my own pet that's not a fish that’ll die 2 days after I get it and I end up flushing it down the toilet. My mom fills out the form and we had to wait 2 days before it got accepted. Our adoption application was accepted and my brother and I scream for joy as we will get our own cat.
We are on the way to the adoption center to get my future little orange and black cat.
“Well welcome back!” The lady said who showed us the cat previously
“Thanks, we’re so happy to be able to take care of this cat,” I said
“I’m glad, you were lucky you got here the day you came or else she would have been taken to a different shelter,” She said
“Oh thank god,” I said
My mom then went to get all the documents and talked to the lady for what seemed like an hour, she told my mom all the things she needs to know about adopting a cat and how to take care of one properly.
We get to see her before putting her in a cage and taking her home, I felt bad because she was scared in the cage but none of the less we go home and let her out. She immediately runs under the couch and INTO the pull out bed because she's scared but after a day she came out and acted as she lived here for years. We kept the name Samantha since she actually knows her name and acts like a dog and runs toward you if you call her name. May 12th is actually her birthday which I celebrated with her a couple of days ago. Now I think about what would have happened if I instead went on vacation, hell I’m so happy I chose the cat but what would you maybe do?
One thing I learned from this,
Washington DC is cool but a new cat is a lot better.
