Shortage of Applesauce

As my cousin Grace, Ben and I sit at the countertop. The rest of the family is crammed around the table at my grandma’s house for Thanksgiving dinner. My brother, Jake, from behind says, “Can you pass me the applesauce, please?”

“Wait! I want some before Clifford over here eats all of it,” says my cousin Alex (he calls him Clifford because he is big and has red hair).

Then, my grandma chimes in. “I knew I should have made more. You guys always eat all of it.” She had doubled the recipe.

My cousin Alex and my brother Jake fight, back and forth, over who should get the last bit. “You’re already big enough you don’t need anymore.”...“Exactly why I should get the last bit because I need more to fill me up!”

My cousins and I laugh at the dumb argument.

Then, finally, my dad says, “Just stop fighting and split it up.”

So my brother and cousin Alex split it and each get a spoonful.

Grandma, once again, apologizes and says, “I’m sorry I knew should have made more. Next time I’ll be sure to triple the batch.”

Since then...there has never been a shortage of applesauce again.
