Denzel Crocker, Mingy or Misunderstood
Throughout nickelodeon’s “The Fairly Oddparents” there are few characters that are special enough to be able to drive the plot and make it flow in such a consistent, cohesive manner as the main antagonist of the cartoon, Denzel Crocker. Although He is viewed as the crackpot screwball of Dimsdale that believes one of his students, Timmy Turner, possesses fairly god parents, and even though after years of being ridiculed and humiliated, yet through all this, he stays determined to prove to the world he’s not crazy by exposing Timmy’s godparents.
Denzel Crocker is able to become one of the, if not the most exuberant, wild character on the show by going over the top with everything he does, whether it’s being an obnoxiously unyielding teacher, a great son to his unforgiving mother, or literally going head over heels to find and capture Timmy’s “Fairy Godparents!” A part of what makes Him such a great antagonist and special character is his dedication to find those fairy godparents, there are scenes in which we see snippets of Crocker’s deranged, and broken childhood, the verbal abuse, and neglect from his mom which leads to his short time infatuation with getting his own fairy godparent, to turn into a lifelong obsession which he uses to drive the plot of the show in most of the episodes he has a place in. Another way we can see his dedication is how many times he gets undeniable evidence that fairy god parents are real, only to be shut down somehow, whether it be a photo of Cosmo and Wanda, a recording of Timmy saying, “I’m Timmy Turner, and I have fairy godparents” or confronting countless fairies time and time again throughout the series, only to find his evidence to be tampered with or destroyed, but no matter the curveball life throws Crocker’s way, we still see him hatching schemes pretending to be a plumber, carpenter, or electrician to get inside the Turner household, or as blatant as hiding out in a tree to peer through Timmy’s window to get a glimpse of these obscure and mystifying fairy god parents. Although it’s obvious he wants to find fairy god parents because it would bring him fame and fortune, the show creators never truly expand on the fact that it is a combination of him just wanting to clear his name to no longer to be seen as that 40yr old nutcase who still believes in fairy godparents and a pinch of insanity. Most times when people watch the show and see Crocker’s wild antics that he involves himself in just for a glimpse of fairy godparents. We just see the crazy nutcase of a teacher, but when you truly look into it, one can realize he was a troubled child failed by the fairy godparent system to protect and help kids in need. Crocker was a neglected child, bullied and tormented at school, poor, depending on only his mom for food, shelter and love, not to mention all throughout the show, and snippets of his childhood, there’s not even a hint to Crocker’s dad, or any father figure for that matter. Crocker was the type of child that should of benefited from having a fairy godparent to be there for him to back him up, yet failed by the system, only to grow up, become a teacher and see a child (Timmy) with two loving parents, a decent social life and nice house is granted 2 fairy godparents. It infuriates him, to a point that most of us will never be able to fully grasp, but he pours that pent up emotion of agony, misery and sorrow into being as evil as possible to Timmy and his fairy’s all while trying to prove the fairy god parents existence to get that life of luxury that he had missed out on earlier in life because he wasn’t granted fairy godparents as a child. That’s what makes Denzel Crocker such a special character.
