My Appreciation for Veterans

Dear Korean War Veteran,

I want to start out by saying how much you inspire me. You and your fellow veterans fighting for the country you call home. I am beyond appreciative of you and your selfless act to sacrifice yourself for the better of our country. You are an inspiration for me and for those of us thinking about joining the military. You are the reason I have my constitutional right to speak my mind and write this letter of my humble appreciation for you. It is an honor writing to a hero in my home state of Wisconsin.

My name is Serena, and I am a Junior. I am so grateful to be given this opportunity to write to an American Hero. Growing up, I never knew how the military really helped this country. I was so young to understand your incredible sacrifice for this country, our country. Looking back, I realize how ignorant I was. Now I understand the important things you have done for me and my family. You have created a legacy that I will remember forever.

I called you a hero because that is what you are. The dictionary definition of “hero” is a person who is admired and idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. You fit that definition perfectly. You are admired by millions of people, including me. You have tremendous courage that I envy. You have achieved so much with what you have done. Thank you.

I recently watched the Honor Flight film, and it inspired me to write to you. While watching this video, I saw the bravery in each and every veteran’s eyes. This “welcome home” will be extremely memorable. You deserve this because of your bravery, courage, and fearlessness. My grandfather joined the Marines when he was 18, and he wasn’t able to serve because of a heart condition. Knowing that you risked everything to help me gain my freedom is amazing. I understand that leaving your family was a very hard thing, and the fact that you had the strength to do so makes me proud to call you-my hero.

I am so excited to write this letter to you. I would be absolutely thrilled to hear your story. It would be an honor. I also want to say thank you for your bravery, courage, and service. Welcome home!

Your Friend,

Serena
