The unknown struggle of anime/manga/light novel creators
Most anime comes from a manga or a light novel like most books turned into movies or shows. This same rule applies but in the case of manga or light novels, they can be turned into an anime and the author may never even know. This isn't the case for all of them, but It seems that the authors and magaka don't receive any royalty fees for their mangas or light novels becoming anime, movies, games, or even toys/accessories. I also watched an interview of a mangaka, in this interview they stated that they were surprised that their maga had turned into an anime and weren't informed until it was already in production/development. Of course these authors are paid for the use of their characters and stories, but they are usually not paid anything from the profits of the animes, movies, games, or toys. This seems to be more like a copyright issue as they are paid for the use but aren't invested into the production of these things, meaning they make money only from their manga or light novel and for the “copyright use” purchase. I find this very weird as I would think they would at least be paid a small amount of money for each episode or whatever it may be. Also not all mangaka and authors make tons of money, it seems that many of the workers on manga and light novels are actually paid very poorly. A former mangaka or friend of one made a company that provides apartments for these mangka and authors or anyone in that workforce because they were paid so little that they could barely afford living. Many of these people go to manga cafes or these apartments all the time. This can be for living or for temporary stay so they can work as they either cost very little or nothing at all. This is very unfortunate as many of these people can even be working on very popular series but still have a hard time with money. Especially since many manga, light novels, anime, ect are a huge form of entertainment not only in Japan but all over the world.
Since I'm well versed in the topic of anime after seeing over one hundred now, many people ask me what is anime about? Well the answer to that question is not much and it surprises many people uninformed. They might think “anime” is just one thing like a sport and the teams that play that sport. This is wrong though, a better comparison would be video games as a whole or television shows as a whole. You can't ask what is anime as a whole because it is many many things. The word anime roughly translates to Japanese cartoon. As you can tell from just the name it is referring to so called “cartoons.” This also can be taken the wrong way though, many people might think of its cartoons it all for kids then. This is absolutely not the case though, anime is like normal television it has many many genres and many age varieties. There are shows rated and aimed towards little kids, some for junior high, high school, and even adults. Going back to the question of “What is anime,” now that it is understood why you can't just say what's the point of anime as a whole or something like that it is easier to explain. Just like you would explain anything else whether that be Television, literature, video games. You would need a more specific answer like what is this show about, what is this genre about, should I watch this show if it is rated for adults
Leading back into the more specific questions it is now possible to explain anime to someone who is clueless about it. After you explain to them that it isn't just “anime” that it is much more than that; you can go more in depth about one show, genre, ect. However in the case of the ratings, don't always trust them. This is because they are Japanese shows so the ratings can differ and they think they rate are different than they are in America. So the ratings can be a little weird and say it’s an adult show when it really isn't vice versa. It really just depends. You can also see that anime is very popular, so much to the point where it has many many places to watch. Since they are from Japan, they have to go through many things like copyright, rights, translation, ect, before we can get them in the United States or other countries. This can differ in each country as not every place is the same as the United States when it comes to the age of consent or adulthood things like that are different in many places and that can cause the ratings to be different. In the case of anime, manga, and light novels, this is different from the US because of Japan's standings on these things. Also going back into things like copyright and royalties things of that manner. This is why America and other countries are limited on the shows or books we get with translation or subtitles. If you look at something like Netflix. You can look at the shows/movies we know that are on there. What you might not know is that in each country there are different shows and or more or less shows/movies on Netflix. This is because mainly copyright reasons, contracts, permission, and even Country laws or age restrictions.
In conclusion, anime, manga, and light novels although all can be placed in the same category of entertainment are all different. One being like a cartoon/show, another being like a comic, and the other being like a novel/book. All of these provide entertainment throughout the world to many forms of audiences ranging from little kids to adults. Not every country has access to all of these though, some places might have one another place doesn’t and vise versa. These manga and light novels can be turned into movies/films/or shows, while anime can be turned into manga/light novels/films/movies. The most common way would be a manga or light novel getting an anime adaptation, and then if it still gains popularity then it can even get a film, movie, or live action adaptation. But this is a weird process as the author of these manga or light novels dont get special royalties or anything like that on the adaptations. Rather they are just paid for copyright and a contract of use mainly. This isn't the case for all of them but the majority, also the mangaka or authors may not even know they got an adaptation until it was in progress of creation. To finalize every country differs in form of copyright, age restrictions, ratings, ect. This can make it difficult to get these animes, movies, films, light novels, and manga in other countries other than the place they are created. This can also cause many shows/books to be cut off in other countries or to take many years for them to receive these shows or get a continuation. This isn't the case for all places or all of these books and shows but for some this may happen.
