I Am a Gun
The poem “I Am a Gun” by Emma R. really got me thinking. After reading this poem, I realized that people are putting their fear in the wrong places. While many may say that they are scared of guns, one should be fearful of the person who has their finger on the trigger. In this poem, the speaker is describing herself as a slave, “a conduit of my master’s will.” The gun only does what it is told to do, and it must obey.
The poet’s use of rhetorical questioning only makes the reader more engaged in the topic of the poem. She is wondering out loud about what could happen and trying to imagine a better reality than the one that exists. She is asking whether everyone would be happier if there was a target other than living things. If guns could voice their thoughts, this poem depicts what they would be thinking.
