"The Oreo Effect", by Jacob Hood depicts his confusion of living as a biracial person. As he journeys through school and social situations, he finds that many people often comment on his race. His peers would say things like, "He talks white, but his skin is brown", and even going far enough to call him an "Oreo". With all these comments and remarks, he slowly loses self confidence and esteem on his own background. This memoir is very important, as it exposes how surprisingly, we are still dealing with racial issues even to this day.

In the memoir, Jacob states, "The answer is that people aren't willing to abandon the standard black/white view. They like viewing things in terms of black or white. It's simpler. More compact. This is exactly what multiracial people are not." Jacob's account of his struggles are important, as they remind other biracial people that they are not alone. That their race does not determine their life, or how they should act, speak, or do anything in any way. Although I am not biracial myself, I am glad that a piece like this exists for the many biracial people out there who are still confused and struggling with themselves, just like Jacob.
