“5x4” by Serin Koh from Fort Lee, NJ really resonated with me. The author successfully critiques society while maintaining a poetic and metaphorical style. The poem circles around the idea that we take our education for granted and the fact that so many girls do not have equal access to education. By using mathematics, Koh is able to inform the reader of the 85 percent of 3.5 million girls who have never had the chance to even learn to write, how privileged the girls who do get education are, how long some girls have to walk to get to school. Through her words, Serin Koh exposes society in a way that wrenches your heartstrings and urges you to change and help the movement. Her writing is well-worded, persuasive, and inspiring. Thank you, Serin, for inspiring me to take part in the movement and learn to appreciate the education I receive every day.
