Eating disorders and how to prevent them or cope with them
Eating disorders, which affect more and more young people, became a modern disease of twenty-first century youth. Such eating disorders are caused by both psychological and physical aspects. Eating disorders are very serious questions which should not be taken easily and lightly as most young people do. Nevertheless, there are ways in which people can cope with or prevent them.
The twenty-first century has brought lots of stereotypes as for our appearance to society. The notion of twenty-first century beauty is equal to thinness. Messages from TV, magazines, newspapers and radio encourage people, especially women, to prove their bodies: to lose weight and to get rid of extra-kilograms and then they’ll find the answer to a happy and carefree life.
However, is it really so? Does this life cost the means people spend to reach their goals?
Aspiring to look like one of the painfully thin models from magazines covers, girls try to lose fat (sometimes even non-existent) and as a consequence, have eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia.
People with such disorders take like an obvious thing that they are too fat and ugly because of the shape of their bodies and they do not accept themselves the way they are. People with eating disorders feel unaccepted by others. They avoid being around others because they feel uncomfortable. These two disorders can be characterized by specific eating habits which are usually harmful and can affect not only the physical, but also the mental stability of the person.
Anorexia includes very strict limitations as for food: no sweets and other food rich in calories. Bulimia is characterized by swallowing great amounts of food in a short period of time; people are out of control while doing it. The kind of food these girls eat is rich in calories and is eaten in a short period of time. Such a way of eating makes the person painfully full and is followed by vomiting to prevent gaining weight. Young girls are absolutely sure that they are approaching their “ideal body” while doing this, but what they are actually doing is risking their physical, mental and emotional health.
Usually most eating disorders start at the teen years. To influence the right choice of improving young ladies bodies, parents should be an example of healthy living. Girls in this age should be provided with special information and knowledge about eating disorders and price they can pay for the desire to look like “fashion icons”.
Beauty is not a standard or a certain attribute of belonging to a specific caste; it can not be created artificially –it is natural. Ladies, do not try to correspond to any modern pales and standarts, be natural and womanly.
