Legalizing Steroids
Throughout the years of professional sports it has been evolving to be what it is today. Professional sports is looking for the next big step to make all sports more interesting. That would be steroids, it’s apart of our games today but under banned usage. There is no downside for steroid usage, it makes the players bigger and stronger, and that will allow athletes to perform better and play longer. Legalizing steroids would make the fans happy, change the game of sports in a positive way, and allow openings for more young iconic players. Many people have a bad image of steroids and it shouldn't be that way.
There are many different types of steroids. The most common type of steroids that athletes use are anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are a group of synthetic hormones, usually derived from testosterone. Anabolic steroids can be consumed orally from pills and liquid medicine, or injected into bloodlines. Many people think that steroids give you more muscles, and that’s not what it does. Anabolic steroids give you more testosterone which helps your body repair the torn muscle cells. Which means your body isn’t sore for a long period of time, and allows you to lift the next day and get bigger that way. If you take steroids and don’t lift it won’t do anything for your body. Even though steroids have side effects they aren’t deadly.
In baseball the steroid era was from 1998-2007, during that period the average home runs for the MLB went from 4,000 to 5,000. Also during that time baseball had Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Barry Bonds setting home run records left and right. For the fans of baseball that was an exciting time to watch baseball. Home runs have decreased in the recent years and has hurt baseball’s popularity. With all these new drug test that have prevented steroids, baseball has been dominated by pitchers. As a fan of the game I would rather see the game be full of moonshot home runs instead of low scoring games. With the decline in the average years that athletes are playing in professional sports, we need a way to fix this problem. The solution could be steroids, steroids allow you to get your body stronger now you sustain the daily punishment from sports. Shouldn’t that lead to the legalization of steroids in sports?
Many people see steroids as a drug that is tainting sports. Others see it as an opening for something great in sports. Where is the downside in steroids? Even though anabolic steroids give you acne, baldness, voice changes; steroids don’t kill you. Norman Fost, professor of pediatrics and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin say, “ More people have died from playing baseball than have died of steroid use.” People need to get the image that steroids is deadly and shouldn’t be used. Julian Savulescu, professor of practical ethics at the University of Oxford says, “ To try to eliminate drugs in sports is like trying to ban alcohol from parties.” Many athletes still use anabolic steroids, so why wouldn't you just legalize something that is already being used. Legalizing anabolic steroids would end all the suspensions for PED usage, and end all the bad criticism surrounding steroids. Steroids would also open up more opportunities for people to play sports, and make the competition more intense. Sports being intense gives the sport a good reputation.
Many of baseball’s great offensive players from the last decade won’t be allowed in the Hall of Fame because of steroid usage surrounding their name. It feels like the last decade has been tainted and sports should change that. Some critics have been saying that sports has been losing its good young players. To get more iconic players they might have to use steroids, or have to dedicate a lot more time in the weight room. Even though steroids gives you advantages against other players, you still have to hit the ball with solid contact to hit a home run. Anyone can take steroids and still not be able to hit a home run. There are many great young players in sports today, however, an extra handful of players can give sports more competition.
Even if you don’t legalize steroids athletes are going to take them. Everything that has its positives also has its negatives. However, in this steroid case the positives over power the negatives. By suspending players for steroid usage the game will become tainted over time. The only reason sports exist is because of the fans, and making the game more fun will help the fan ratings go up. The next generation of sport fans need something to get excited over and that could be steroids. Anabolic steroids won’t hurt the users, and there isn’t any downside in using it, so why not use it? Or is it too sweet to think about a place where steroids are and sports is more interesting.
