“Tiktok has been downloaded more than 4.1 billion times” according to Agorapulse (Pollock). Even though TikTok has been downloaded over several billion times, this popular app now faces an issue that could jeopardize the popularity of the app, the ban of TikTok in the U.S. The U.S. government tried to ban TikTok many times in the past and even took the owner to court, but still remained open to the users in America. America's problem with TikTok is that they think the Chinese company that owns TikTok is trying to spy on America through TikTok. Almost all of the users disagree with this and try to keep TikTok open for use in the U.S. Currently, Biden has signed the bill and has given the company 9 months to remove themselves from TikTok so that they can ensure that America is not being spied on.

This can lead to other problems such as what TikTok is going to be like without the company; will it stay the same or will it worsen and draw away its users? If you say that another company can buy TikTok, how do you know that they are not spying on America? If an American company buys TikTok then how do other countries know we are not spying on them? This might also draw many of its current foreign users away from the app. Another option would be to get rid of the app entirely and use another trusted app such as YouTube or Instagram, which have their own version of TikTok. All in all, there would be no easy way to save TikTok. Unless America can trust the company that owns TikTok and allow the app in the U.S. However, President Biden did give them 9 months, which is more than enough time to find some sort of solution. So there is a very good chance that the company will come to a compromise with the U.S. on the ban of the app.

Influencers on TikTok have also been trying to tell people that this time, the ban is serious and that they have to do something about it, like talk to their state's governor about the issue. CNN decided to speak about this issue. They say, “A similar TikTok bill had been passed by the House in March, but it stalled in the Senate. In a procedural move, House Republicans this month attached a revised TikTok bill to the foreign aid package in hopes of forcing the Senate to vote on the TikTok legislation” (CNN). As shown, the bill that was passed back in March was not very serious. Whereas, the new and revised bill is very serious and is trying to force the Senate to make their decision quickly. They also said, “Bundling the bill with the foreign aid — a top US priority — fast-tracked the TikTok bill and made it more likely to pass”(CNN). They also made the bill a “US priority” by bundling it with something important like foreign aid. The Senate has voted to agree to pass the bill and has been passed on to the president. President Biden has decided to give them 9 months after the Senate has passed the bill to figure something out or it will get banned. The reason they want this banned is because there have been rumors of the Chinese spying on Americans since it is owned by a Chinese man.

In conclusion, the possible government ban arising from worries about national security and data privacy makes the future of TikTok in the U.S. unclear. Despite the app’s enormous popularity and user base, its future is uncertain due to government conflicts surrounding its ownership. The company’s ability to overcome obstacles and allay government concerns will be tested in the coming months. In the end, how this is resolved will affect millions of user and content providers’ decisions as well as the digital environment.
