Class Monitoring
In recent news, the topic of allowing and legalizing the installment of cameras and microphones into classrooms to monitor teachers and students. This bill has been made by Florida lawmakers and proposed by Bob Rommel, a representative from Naples, Florida (Quynh).
Rommel gives a message about why this would be a good measure to take in front of government officials saying, "I think if we can do it in a safe way to protect the privacy of students and teachers, I think we should do it," he told CBS Miami. "I haven't heard a response good or bad from any teachers, but … it's not their private space. It's our children's space, too." (Quynh).
This can be a very controversial topic. Microphones and cameras are definitely a large action that would be taken by schools, and would create many problems, but at the same time could create a new sense of motivation amongst students.
Starting with cons, having cameras and mics in a classroom could easily make people feel uncomfortable as if the school was patrolling their every move. I know at least for me, things like that would make me anxious whilst I’m in class as well as even create a new possible distraction for me and I’m sure many other students. It also feels somewhat violating because having the ability to listen to students’ private conversations during class can possibly lead to someone getting in trouble because the school was eavesdropping on other people's lives and conversations.
For Pros, at least for some students, it would depend on what and how they become motivated. This situation could ensure students pay attention in class and focus more than they might when there is no camera/microphone. The microphones and video cameras may give constructive intimidation to encourage students to stay on task. Another pro could be prevention of mistreatment between students, or even with teachers or other adults in the classroom. If a student is being bullied, or maybe there is some sort of feud going on between a student and teacher, or adult working in the school, having cameras and microphones could be very helpful.
Overall, the installment of cameras as well as microphones in classrooms is a very dodgy topic as it can go either way when it comes to people’s opinions on it. Some may believe that it’s a violation of their or their child’s privacy, whilst others may think it will motivate their child or themselves on a higher level to focus on their work.
