The story is about a young girl called Iparis. Her mother passed away so her work-a-holic father decides to adopt two kids.

Chapter 1: The Only Chapter of the Book

I sometimes look back and wonder what is the feeling called, “Happiness”? Then I look at my memories and see how strange the feeling is once you understand the meaning.
When my father came home, he’d brought two more with him. I stood awkwardly in the kitchen holding the sandwiches I’d made as he had introduced the two young boys to me.
“This,” he said pointing to the blond-haired one, “Is Mink.”
“And this,” he pointed to the brown-haired one, “Is Ren.”
I looked at the two boys who were hiding behind my father and realized I looked startled. I switched my expression to a grin and said, “Hey guys, are you my dad’s students? Are you staying for dinner? Good thing I made enough food!”
“Actually, Iparis” my dad interrupted, “I adopted them.”
I dropped the sandwiches, my dad didn’t seem to notice and turned to talk to the boys, “Iparis is now your big sister, so can you all get along for me please?”
Then he casually looked to me and said, “I have work to do.” And strolled off to his office.
I looked back at the boys, Ren hid behind Mink. They both trembled and Mink spoke in a quivering voice, “I’m sorry we made you drop the sandwiches, miss, please don’t be mad.”
Ren had tears trickling down his face. Then I noticed something, something my father or any adult would never seen. The boys’ eyes’ irises were pure red.
I realized how rude I was to stare, so I smiled again and said, “You think I’m mad? I’m extremely lucky! I get to be a big sister!”
Mink spoke, “You’re not mad at us?”
“Of course I’m not! But you’ll have to help me make dinner again.” I held out my hands, Ren and Mink took one and we went to make dinner. They smiled for the first time and I smiled to myself.
“Why are you smiling, miss? Ren asked.
“My name is Iparis, not “miss” and I’m smiling because this is the first time I’ve seen you two smile.
Later, I made a bed on the couch for them, Ren fell asleep immediately. I sat on a chair doing home work, I felt a tap on my leg and looked up to see Mink standing before me.
“Iparis?”
“Yes?”
“How old are you?”
“I’m 15, you?”
“I’m 13, Ren is 7”
“Are you brothers?”
“Yes, we come from different mothers though. How come your dad has brown hair and yours is black?”
“I got my black hair from my mom” I said, “but she’s gone now.”
There was an awkward silence.
“You saw our eyes, didn’t you?” Mink whispered
I nodded.
“Please don’t tell your dad.”
I nodded again, “How come?”
“Just don’t.”
I decided not to pester him anymore. “Alright time to go to bed.” I led him to the couch and tucked him in next to Ren. I returned to my chair and fell asleep, only to be woken by screams in the morning.
“NO, GO AWAY! NO LEAVE ME, PLEASE NO! I DON’T WANNA HURT YOU! GET BACK PLEASE!”
I sat upright, Ren’s cries were pained and piercing. I rushed over to him, Mink was up and trying to calm Ren down. I picked up the squirming Ren and cradled him on the couch singing softly the words my mother use to sing to me:

“Katachi no nai kimochi wasurenai you ni
Kimari kitta layout wo keshita
Futo kuchizu sanda furesu wo tsukamaete
Mune ni himeta kotoba nose sora ni toki hanatsu no

Kimi ni tsutaetai koto ga
Kimi ni todoketai koto ga
Takusan no ten wa sen ni natte
Tooku kanata he to hibiku

Kimi ni tsutaetai kotoba
Kimi ni todoketai oto ga
Ikutsumono sen wa en ni natte
Subete tsunageteiku
Doko ni datte ah...

Masshiro ni sunda hikari wa kimi no you
Kazashita te no tsukima wo tsutau koe ga
Futo ugoita yubisaki kizamu rizumu ni
Arittake no kotoba nose sora ni toki hanatsu no.”

He began to calm down, tears streaming down his face. I smiled and brushed away a tear from his cheek. Mink sat next to be anxiously looking at Ren.
“Why were you crying?” I asked softly to Ren.
He looked at me with such a terrified face, “Because I’m a monster inside, but I’m scared, I’m scared that I hurt others, I will hurt people, I will hurt you.”
Mink nodded silently as if agreeing. Their unknown past seemed so dark and corrupt, maybe now since I was here I could help.
Mink said, “Ren heard people screaming in his dream, they were blurred figures, and everything was red.”
I turned to him, “How did you know?”
“I don’t know, I mean I do, but I don’t know how.”
I looked back at Ren, “You’re wrong, you won’t hurt others or me.”
“How do you know?” They both asked.
“That red you hate so much, a hero wears it proud! It’s alright, you don’t need to live in your past. You don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
They looked at me, only half believing.
I sighed, I was a big sister now so I needed to try my best to make my little siblings happy.
I placed Ren on the couch and got up, walking to a trunk near the window, my mother’s items. I opened it slowly and pulled an item out, I turned and walked back over to the boys. It was a red scarf my mother had worn.
“Hey guys, look over here!” I held up the crimson muffler and wrap it around me.
“We’ll be a secret organization or something!”
Ren and Mink grinned, “So we’ll be heroes?”
“Yup, we’ll be heroes and we’re gonna save the world!” I nodded.
“No one will cry anymore or be afraid?”
“Not in our world.”
“We’ll all fit in?”
“We’ll all fit in.”
“I’d like that.”
We played heroes that day, racing on missions, but just because we played pretend it didn’t mean nothing, I knew that they would change the world. I hoped that we could always be a happy family, but hope isn’t always enough.

Years passed and we grew older, I had turned 18, Mink was 16, and Ren was 10. Our world of happiness turned to black.
My father shut himself in his office, yelling at anyone who would enter. Mink and Ren’s eyes became darker red. Mink started to ignore me and and shut me out, and Ren would come home covered in bruises and cuts, he would never tell me how he got them, they both kept yelling, “I WISH YOU WERE NEVER MY SISTER, YOU WOULDN’T UNDERSTAND ANYTHING!”
Everything felt wrong, yet I couldn’t tell anyone how I felt. At school whenever I held a worried expression and teachers asked why I just smiled and nodded, “I’m okay.”
I started to hear voices in my mind:
“The only way to save your family is to die… Gain red eyes… no more pain… Happiness is what you are trying to find.. This is the only way to help...”
I kept crying to the voices, ““God no, oh please don’t destroy what I had found. I beg you, please, I can’t take it anymore! Why can’t you stop breaking futures?!” But they would never answer.
Then I started wondered, if they were my eyes, those red eyes, could I possibly be the one and only hero who could save their futures. I knew it was a childish fantasy, but what if the voices in my head were right? If I died could I gain red eyes and return to this world, to my house, to my broken family?
Sure, I was awkward and clumsy, but on this mission I had to go alone.
Now I’m gone and since then I’ve wondered what “organization” is doing now. I hope Ren and Mink getting along with each other. They probably hate me now, or maybe just hurt. I keep wondering, have I become a “Big Sister” to them by now?
I hope they remember the word I loved with every bit inside me and maybe they could understand that “Happiness” I had felt. And when a new day breaks, I hope you love the feeling too.
