“I opened myself up to the gentle indifference of the world. Finding it so much like myself”

I forgot everything. I forgot your beauty. I forgot the light at the end of the tunnel. I forgot the light of your own radiance. Most sadly, I forgot your love and what you have done for me, my darling Maribelle. Now, I remember. I remember how we met at university at 18. I remember the way your parents had hated the poor kid marrying into the estate. I remember clutching your hand as Nathan was born and Ellen and Allen too. The kiss I gave you at that moment was memorable as well. I had to kiss you as that was the moment when you were most beautiful. There is no one else like you. You loved me truly and I wasted it. Twenty-two years you had loved me and I much shorter. Oh, why was youth been wasted on the young? I wonder what everyone must think of me. I wonder for our children. Where I once saw our love, I see sorrow. Anyway, I do not regret having met you. I miss you, Maribelle. Thank you. The funeral director asked, “Would you like her in ashes or buried?” I replied with a tear on my cheek, “She would have wanted a burial.”
