Fallen Dreams

Tears escape my eyes while my knees crumble under the weight of sorrow that fills me. I stare blankly ahead at the slab of granite that now takes place of the one thing I love.

“Hey, it’s only been a week since you left, but it feels like yesterday you were here, cuddling with me on the old worn-down couch in your apartment.” My heart slowly clenches, as I reminisce about all the fond memories we had together. A gust of wind brushes against my face almost in a gentle caress. “We had so many plans, we were gonna save up for a new house, get married, and have a family, but that was all taken away from us.” I run my hands over the words etched into the granite reading, “In loving memory of Ace Monroe”. My phone buzzes in my back pocket indicating that it was time for me to leave. I lay the bouquet of flowers, I brought, on the hay-filled patch of ground before tugging the worn-down letterman jacket around my shivering body, slowly walking away from the love of my life, promising to return before the day is done.
