The Injury That Ended It All

There I sat, thinking in my dark room, when my annoying little sister Lily would come barging in the door like she usually does to see if I was awake. A couple minutes later she came in yelling, “You ready for your big day.”

I replied in a groaning voice, “Can you not come in and yell when it’s this early in the morning, plz. Also yeah i am ready.”

Once again, even after i told her not to yell, she yelled, “Good.” and quickly ran off to another part of the house.

If you didn’t notice but something big was gonna happen to me. I was going to be getting drafted into the Major League Baseball and hopefully by my favorite team the San Francisco Giants. All my coaches have been saying that I would be the number one overall draft pick which is the first person and usually the best person to get chosen. I started to get up from my bed and i put my lucky blue shirt and some shorts.

I heard my mom saying, “ Breakfast is done come and get it.” from downstairs, so I ran downstairs to go see what she made for us to eat. As I expected she made waffles. I made a loud groan when i saw the waffles and as I did that my mom said. “You better appreciate these, I could have had you make your own food.”

I replied, “I would have been fine with making my own food as long as it’s not waffles.”.I grabbed some waffles and stormed out my house to go talk to my coach. After storming out my house and walking to my coach i realized that i had left my car keys in the house, and i decided to just keep on walking(which I would later regret doing). As I was walking to my coach’s house I stopped at Taco Bell for something to eat. When I walked in, lots of people started saying, “Hey it's lonzo how you doing.”

Another said, “ you ready to get drafted Mr. Baseball.”(That was my nickname people would call me).

After I ate and talked to all the people who I hardly knew, I continued on walking to my coach’s house whose name is Carl Halladay. About one hour later I arrived at my coach’s house. He greeted me with a smile. I asked him, “Can we practice for a bit to take my mind off before the draft.

He said, “yeah whatever will make you feel better.”

Later, my coach and I put on our suits and got ready for our ceremony. We both got in his car and drove to the Commissioner’s office which is where the the draft will take place. By the time we got there it was about six o’clock at night. We both went into the building and sat in our designated seats. I was talking to some of the other players around me when my coach said, “Shut up it’s starting.” I heard Rob Manfred, the MLB commissioner, say, “ The first pick in the 2015 MLB draft goes to the San Francisco Giants and they are now on the clock.”. I quickly started to panic and sweat as I began to start thinking if it was gonna be me or not. I saw the clock counting down; three, two, one, zero. The commissioner came back out and put the paper on the podium that had the name of the person who would be the first pick.

My coach next to me had said, “No matter what happens I'm still proud of you.”

The Commissioner opened the paper and waited to what felt like years, he then said, “And with the number pick in the 2015 draft, the San Francisco Giants select… Frederick Bernard from Van Nuys High School in Los Angeles, California.”

My heart felt like it dropped out of body. I knew that there was still a very good chance I would be the second pick, but it still felt terrible because of all the people saying that I would be the number one. I thought even if I was the number two pick in the draft I would still be devastated. But then the commissioner had come back and he looked like he was worried, he started to say. “I’m sorry to say but there has been a mistake in the draft, the number pick in the 2017 draft is actually Lonzo Ball from Atascadero High School in Atascadero, California.

My body felt like it had been brought back from the dead when I heard those words. Everyone around me started yelling and screaming right into my ear, it annoyed me a lot but I was too excited to care about it. My coach next to me had started to say, “See i told you that you would do it, I knew that you would be the number one pick congratulations, I’m proud of you.”

“Thank you coach, I wouldn’t have gotten here without you.”. We had all finished celebrating at the entrance of the MLB office and it was about ten o’clock at night and there wasn’t much light. My coach had already left and there were only about two or three people around and I didn’t know them. Since i had forgotten my car keys and my car and I Didn’t know anyone here i decided to walk home. As I started walking home I remembered that I had gotten in a argument with my mom. I was hoping she wouldn’t still be mad. I continued walking home and I was debating on calling my mom asking for a ride or not. When I turned the corner I saw a red mercedes that looked exactly like my moms car coming towards the way I was walking. I figured it was my mom and I walked into the middle of the street because I knew she would slow down. As the car kept on coming my way I noticed it wasn’t slowing down, in fact it was actually speeding up. As it came closer I quickly became scared and I started to move out of its way and it just barely missed me and right there I knew this person wanted me to get hit by the car. I started running away and it came chasing after me. It had caught up to me quickly because it’s a car and it’s pretty easy for them to go fast. I tried to get out of its way and I wasn’t so lucky this time, the car had hit me but just barely, I was still able to move so I tried getting out of there as fast as I could but that plan didn’t go so well this time it came back and did hit me and this time I was knocked unconscious.

Next thing I knew, I was in the hospital and there was cast on my right arm and both of my legs. One of the doctors had came in and there was police officer with him and behind him was my mom, but she looked very sad and scared and her hands were behind her back. The doctor started talking to me and I wasn’t really paying attention I was mainly looking at my mom the entire time. Then I heard the Doctor say, “ You will have to be in a wheelchair the rest of your life.”. I immediately stopped looking at my mom and stared at the doctor with my mouth open and my eyes starting to water. I started crying and I didn’t what to do or what to say. My mom started to run over to me and comfort me, but the police officer came in front of her and me.

I yelled at the officer to move and he said, “No she might try to hurt you again.”

I got really confused and more sad and yelled, “ What are you talking about.”

He replied with, “ Your mom is the one who hit you with the car.” I suddenly got mad, sad, confused, and almost every other emotion that goes along with those. I yelled as loud as I possibly could for everyone to get out and they quickly did. I didn’t know what to do anymore I felt like i couldn’t trust anyone or anything. I even thought about committing suicide. I had been crying and screaming for about ten minutes and my coach had come in. I didn’t want anything to do with him and told him to leave and he wouldn’t leave.

Eventually he calmed me down and when I was calm he told me, “ I don’t  know how you must be feeling, but you will get thru this and I will help you.”

I looked and smiled at him and said, “ Thank you coach, at least I can can trust you.”
