What You Never Forget
I remember this night like it happened yesterday. I stopped before I turned the
corner of the dark, vacant street, trying my best to spot any oncoming cars. My
hands hung loosely on the steering wheel and I gently pressed on the gas pedal.
Once I had straightened my car out I relaxed and my eyes wandered down to my phone, which I had forgotten to turn on silent. The vibrations taunted me and I decided it was safe to just check my notifications. I smiled to myself when I saw my mom had texted me pictures of a new kitten she had just adopted. I looked back up at the road and I heard a loud honk. It felt like my soul had left my body and I froze, unable to get my car back in my lane. It felt like I was watching a movie. My car slowly pushed into the other vehicle, crushing the entire hood. I will never forget the
horror in the other driver's eyes, that in seconds became lifeless and hollow, staring through me for all of eternity. My windshield shattered into a thousand pieces, the glass piercing the skin on my arms and face. Then the airbag popped out, almost suffocating me. I felt a dull pain radiate through my entire body and my sense of awareness started to become fuzzy. I tried to move but I felt like I was paralyzed and when I opened my mouth to scream only silence followed. Why wasn't I dead yet? For what seemed like forever, I waited, leaning on the airbag and staring at my glass coated legs until I saw red and blue lights
