Why Now
Prologue
He was dying and there was nothing I could do, I just had to stand around and watch him die. My uncle was dying of mutation. When my uncle was in the Green Ghosts ( a secret section of the military) they were injecting some the members with a serum that supposedly would make them stronger and immune to diseases. But later on they found out that the men that got injected with the serum were dying for no reason at all. Thats when my uncle got out of the Green Ghosts. None of us really know what happened to the rest of the members of the Green Ghosts. Anyways when my uncle got out of there, he seemed just fine. And apparently he wanted to keep it that way because he didn’t tell us what the doctor had told him; he had about 6 to 7 months to live. I think he is regretting that because we could of done something to help him but now, he is dying and there is nothing we could do about it.
Chapter 1
“The Old Oak Tree”
I laid down in my bed as I thought about how I had to find out the real reason why my uncle was dying. No one else is willing to put in the effort to find out why all of this is happening. They just want to leave it alone, because they are too caught up the the rush of their own lives to see that he's dying. I sat up and heard the sound of the buzzer on my phone telling me I got a message.
Hay Skylar, come to the old
oak tree, Christen and I want
to talk to you about something.
:D
Ok I will be there as soon as
I can see you two in about a
minute or so. :D
Great see ya soon!
I grabbed my phone, put it in my pocket, then headed out of my door and went up the stairs and was looking for my mom. School was recently let out for the day so dad was not home yet. I soon found mom in the garage on the treadmill.
“Mom, can I go down to the old oak tree?”
“Ya, but be back soon, dinner will be ready in about 30 minutes.”
“Ok.”
I walked out of the garage and closed the door behind me. I went through the pantry and the kitchen. I could smell the lasagna cooking in the Crock Pot and peaked through the glass lid, I was so excited for dinner, lasagna is my favorite! I walked to the door and my little brother Aiden was at the door blocking it so that I couldn’t go through.
“Aiden move. I need to go.”
“NO only boys can go through.”
“Ya, well then I will tell mom not to give you any deseret.”
“Nooooo… “
“Well then MOVE!”
“Fine. Meanie poo!”
I swear one day if you wake up and Aiden is not there it was me. I finally got to head out the door and started walking down the road to the old oak tree. The tree was not that far away, but for some reason it seemed miles away. It seemed that it had taken me 10 or so minutes the get there, for I had been deep in thought. I got to the oak tree and climbed up the trunk and grabbed the big strong branches. I was in a deep thought when Jackie (Jacquelyn) yelled at me to hurry up I looked up at Jackie and Christen way up in the tree.
“Hey girl, what took you so long to get here?” Jackie said.
“Just thinking.” I replied in a kind distant sort of way.
Both Jackie and Christen looked at me like I was sick or my body was about to fall apart.
“This is more serious there we thought.” They said to each other.
“Since when am not allowed to think?” I asked them.
“Since we are not at school you are no longer allowed to think.” Christen said.
“Fine then, I won’t.” I retorted.
We paused.
“Why did you want me to come?” I asked them.
“We wanted to see how you were doing.”
“Well I’m fine and if that was all you wanted I going home.”
“Wait! ” they said but by the time they said it I was long gone.
I as you can obviously tell, I was not in a good mood. When I got home I ate and went to bed I wondered if I hurt my friends feeling. I hoped they that I didn’t try to. I will talk to them about it tomorrow.
Chapter 2
The Old Captain
I just back from talking with my Uncle trying to get some information from him. Apparently the mutation is affecting his memory. I asked him if he could remember anything about the head or leader or captain of the Green Ghosts. It took him awhile to respond but when he did I was surprised.
“Well I think that he live on his boat just to the north of here.”
I thanked him and then left. I had all day to get some info on this “thing” that John had ( my uncle). As I walked up and down the different ports in Miami I suddenly saw an old man that looked just as John had described. Scruffy gray hair with a few white ones here and there, big bushy eyebrows and big kind eyes the color of a perfect blue sky. I walked over to him.
“Can I ask you a few questions sir.”
He responded with a big smile.
“Why of course.” He said joyfully
He put down the the little bridge and then helped me up. He offered me a chair and I sat.
“ Can I ask you your name?” He said.
“My name is Skylar.” I replied
“So what do you what to know?”
“Well first you should know who I am. Do you remember a man in the” I lowered my voice then continued “ Green Ghost, named John T. Williams?”
He looked surprised by my question. Then said “How do you know about the Green Ghosts. No one knows about the Green Ghosts.”
“Well John is my uncle and he is dying. I was wondering what was making him, well, die.”
“I sorry I can’t tell you what you want to know, it is restricted information.”
“Are you sure or do you just not want to tell me and have my uncle continue to suffer as you keep the secret to him living to yourself?
I quickly responded. Then started running off the boat quickly jumped down I was started crying as I thought of John. I ran home as fast as I could. When I got home I ran to my bedroom and slammed my door.
