The night sky was full of stars but no moon. Tonight, the sky was clouded and a light fog rolled over the stars, dimming their shine. Although no moon was present, the sky still lit up like it had every other night this summer. A translucent silhouette of the moon shone through the fluffy black clouds that attempted to conceal it. I traced the outline of the glowing circle with my eyes, stopping where I had began moments ago. As the breeze above me picked up, it carried the clouds with it, causing the sky to mimic the motion of the sea: the clouds rolling as waves did over a shore. The gliding mass reflected off my glassy eyes, my pupils dilating as the moons light poked through the smoggy black atmosphere. I laid down in the cool grass, as the pointy blades dug into the exposed skin that my dress left unguarded. Drops of dew blanketed the ground, causing goosebumps to rise up off my body. I laid my hands over my chest, posing as if I were a corpse lying in a casket. The crickets and frogs sang out the nighttime anthem that they had grown accustomed to over time. Blaze, my cat, sat next to me, his black glossy coat appearing slick in the moonlight. He looked down to me, his green eyes focused. They flickered up to the sky, his pupils adjusting to the dull light. The black center splitting his green iris down the middle with a clean edge, sharp enough to cut like a blade. After studying the moon for a moment, he contently walked down to my feet. His paws matted down the wet tufts of grass that had gathered together after this mornings early mowing. His white gloved feet rest beneath my bare leg, his head laying atop my shin. The little dew drops that clung to his whiskers soundlessly trickled down the plastic like hairs, falling back down to the ground. He closed his eyes, resting after the long day he had endured. I too closed my eyes, enjoying the silence we laid in. Small droplets of water fell onto my skin, immediately being soaked up by my pores. I slightly sat up, causing Blaze to flinch at my sudden actions. My head tilted up to the sky, now observing the rain clouds that hovered above me, blocking the moon once again. Rain started to fall more rapidly, and within a few minutes I was sitting in the middle of a downpour. Blaze looked up to me, bothered by the inconvenience. Unlike most people, I slowly laid back down and resumed the calm state of mind I had been in a few minutes ago. Blaze rest his head back on my leg, not seeming to mind the weather either. The beautiful sound of thunder came from a few miles away, echoing through the dark sky. A small smile crept up on my lips. I was home.
