The Kidneys

Daphne knew that her neighbour, Old Mr Michael had no relatives. He was said to be an old ‘prophet-of-doom’. But, no one knew so for true as they have never had the certainty to talk with him. His house was lonely as a deserted island, with no euphoria. He had no one to pull his weight. He had no one to prepare meals for him. He had no one to even look after him when he was taken to the hospital yesterday.

Yes- He was diagnosed with Kidney Failure and he needed a donor immediately. Before that, he needed food and water. Daphne had a guilty conscience because she did not check on Mr Michael in the hospital. So, she decided to drop in to see him on her way to college. When she went to the ward, she realized that from his facial expressions that he hadn’t had his meal.

Out of pity, she bought him a scrumptious meal. But, the poor old man could not eat it by himself. So, Daphne fed him. She went to see him daily and spoke with his doctor about finding the donor in a week. She spent a lot of time with Mr Michael and found out that he was a really ‘soft-effacing humane’ and he had a jovial family too, but all of them died in a plane crash and he was the only person to survive.

A week passed, but Daphne could not find a donor. And Mr Michael was really feeble. Daphne on tenterhooks. She did not want the neighbourhood to lose a good man who they did not even socialize with. So, she began to think hard. Finally, she made up her decision. “I shall donate my kidney to Mr Michael,” she thought. After the kidney operation, Mr Michael was fit as a fiddle. He looked for Daphne everywhere. He asked the doctor, “Dr Elena, where is Daphne, my guardian and donor?”

The doctor looked down and she gave Mr Michael a piece of paper. He ate his heart out as he read it. “Mr Michael, I haven’t thought of anything these days other than saving the life of a genuine man like you. About three years ago, I donated my kidney to my little sister, Alya. If I donate my kidney to you, that costs my life. Death is the perfect price to pay for a kind man’s life. Socialize! Show people that their rumors aren’t true. Be happy in the neighbourhood. And please check on Alya occasionally.”

Since that day, Mr Michael's house was filled with voices of joy and chatter. Many people were there for Mr Michael as he understood that relatives don’t just come through blood. He loved Alya like his own grandchild and became her guardian angel. She was really devoted to him. Mr Michael looked at Alya as if she was Daphne and always called her ‘Aurum' as he always said that Daphne had a heart of gold.

If I win this contest, the first people to be happy are Dad and Mom. I dedicate this to them. I also dedicate this to Awrah, Aara and Amdhi for their support. I dedicate this to Ameer Uncle and Paji Auntie who were no different to my own parents. I dedicate this to Milan Uncle, who supported me in almost every step of my journey. I also dedicate this to Umma, Soodha Umma and Khaniz Umma. Last but not the least, I dedicate this to my Late Grandpa Rahmath Appa who would be the happiest person in the world to see me here.

@Afra, this is wonderfully written. And the part about Daphne's sister is heart-touching. It made me cry.
