The baby had a new style of waddling; shifting his weight from one shaky leg to the other, he inched his way to the kitchen with a big smile and a little happy bounce every time he took a step. Occasionally he still fell back into his bum, but the diaper softened the blow of the fall and he burst into giggles and clapped his hands.
By the time he got to the kitchen table he was thoroughly pleased with himself. Drool dribbled from his mouth but his mother, still asleep, was not there to wipe it off with her sleeve. Instead, the baby just kept toddling about the kitchen, swaying about this way and that. When his young mother finally rose, he waddled to show her his new skill. He grinned at her, this big gummy smile, so big she could see the baby teeth poking out at the back of his bottom row. She watched him and wondered how she could have ever thought of giving him away.
