A Joyous Thanksgiving
It’s Thanksgiving morning and I wake to the smell of the turkey that was already cooking in the oven. A lot of my family was staying at my grandparents lake house and I was the last to wake up which rarely ever happens. The delicious smell of the turkey makes me hungry so I roll out of bed and walk to the kitchen. At this point i’m still half asleep. The bright lights hurt my eyes as I walk out from my room. I had to squint until my eyes were used to the bright lights in the kitchen. I watch my mom and my grandma hard at work making the mashed potatoes, the green bean casserole, pumpkin and apple pie. They haven’t realized I was watching them yet. I can tell they are having fun. I saw my mom spilled gravy down the front of her shirt and my grandma was laughing at her. The whole house could hear them laughing. They were being very loud. They were spending quality time together just like any mother and daughter should. I see in the living room that the men of the family are getting ready to watch Packer game and on the porch are the girls of the family watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. These two channels were the only ones on during Thanksgiving. I was the only child at the lake house this time for Thanksgiving so it did get boring but being around my family was a highlight of the weekend. I did look for someone to hang around with but all the adults were talking or watching something and I could clearly tell didn’t want to be bother. I looked to see if there were any of the neighbor children outside but no one was at either house so I was just by myself but I didn’t mind. My mom finally noticed I was standing there in my blue shirt and shorts that I wore to bed. She said “good morning, would you like to help make the pumpkin pie?” I was debating do I go back to bed but I love to cook so I agreed to help. It sure did look like they needed my help too. Hours went by as I helped cook and bake the different dishes for the Thanksgiving meal.
It was almost time to eat and the table had yet to be set. It was always my job to set the table. I always looked forward to it. My grandma taught me how when I was younger and I learned quickly where to place the forks, knives and everything else. Everytime I set the table, it brings back that memory and all the memories I have setting the table at each event or holiday that our family spent together. It will be something that I remember forever. After I finished setting the table everyone came to sit down. All the wonderful smells made me super hungry and I was so ready to eat. We said Grace and all piled our plates high with food. Some had second and third helpings. This was one Thanksgiving that I will never forget.
