Past and Present

Whip, whip. The overseer’s whip
Causes the old lady to bleed.
Cotton must be picked
Gotta go faster
Hurry up, hurry up,
Pick up
Speed.

Sing, sing. The people sing
Praises to God.
God will help us
Get us out of this mess
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Praise the
Lord.

White, white. My skin is white
But that doesn’t make it ok.
Who cares about the color
Doesn’t make us better
Wrong, wrong
We’re all the
Same.

Cruel, cruel. We are cruel
Hurting little kids
Tearing apart families
Segregating brothers is wrong
America, America
Let freedom
Ring.

I was inspired to write this while studying history in the eighth grade. I hope this tugs at your heartstrings, and inspires feelings of brotherhood in all.
