A Hidden Disaster

The storm really started to pick up as Ayla Dalton was walking home from her final day as a sophomore at Richmond High School. She met up with her best friend since the age of 2, Clyde. Clyde Morris is now a Senior at Voltz Elite High School. Morris was the quarterback on the football team and star of the town. Dalton, on the other hand, attended the average high school but was an above average dancer. The sound of the rain hitting the bubble surrounding the city was aggressive.

“I wonder what the world is like outside of the bubble.” exclaimed ayla as she looked up to the plastic wrapped sky.

“I imagine it’s still covered in waste and super toxic just like it was 70 years ago,” thought clyde, “The textbooks at Voltz always say that the world was super beautiful, and that plants and trees were everywhere. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tree or any type of plant for that matter!”

“Yet it’s 2157, the earth should be somewhat recovered from the damage. But oh how I wish I could see what the earth was like before the humans destroyed it.” stated ayla.

“I’m just glad my Junior year is over and it’s break!!” shouted clyde

The two continued to walk home casually talking about their summer plans and their hopes for the upcoming year. The “sky” began to darken as the storm worsened. Yet, the town was still lit up due to all the electronics everywhere. The world was now completely digital. No paper or white boards anywhere. Everything was done on some sort of electronic device.

Ayla noticed on one of the street lights, right near the edge of the bubble, there was sparks.

“What is that?” pointed out ayla.

“I think it’s an electronic malfunction of some sort. Maybe the wires are tearing. I know how to fix that.” explained clyde.

As the two got closer smoke started to rise. When they got to the issue, there was a big pond of water right near the light.

Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

Clyde looked up to see a hole in the bubble. Rain was seeping into the enclosed city. The seal hasn't been broken once since it was put up.

“This is our chance clyde!” whispered ayla, “We can see what’s out there and make a difference in this town! What if the world is healed!”

“Ayla don’t be ridiculous; let’s just leave it alone.” said clyde as he started to walk away.

Yet ayla wasn’t quite finished exploring the hole. She dragged over a bench and peered into the opening.

There was trees everywhere; thousands upon thousands. The outside world looked luscious and green. The rain made every plant shine and thrive. Ayla called for clyde to come take a look but he refused and continued to walk home without her.

A patroler noticed ayla standing on the bench and asked her what she was doing.

“You see officer, I found a hole in the bubble and was just curious about what was out there. The world looked beautiful! I’ve never seen that stuff before!” explained ayla.

The patroler quickly typed something into the device he was holding and sirens began to ring in the distance.

“Miss! Don’t be alarmed but we need to fix the hole and take you to The Center to discuss how the hole got there.” explained the patroler.

“Sir wait the hole was here when I got here! There was sparks! It wasn’t me!” stated ayla.

“Miss please don’t panic but I would like to also inform you that everything you saw was just more screens.” said the patroler.

Ayla knew that he just told her a lie. She saw that it wasn’t screens and it felt different. This was about to go bad. Next thing she knew she was sprinting into the city. Sirens were blaring and approaching her quickly. She ran into the billboard center, only to dashed into the control room. Once there, she started to program the machines to spread a message.

The world is healed. The government is hiding it. Let’s break the bubble.

As the message spread, people started to get very confused and gather in the streets. Ayla began to run out of the building and into the crowd in hopes to avoid the people after her.

But she was too late. The moment she stepped out of the door, guns fired. People shrieked; babies cried. No one knew what was happening. Everyone was running in all different directions. It was pure chaos.

Clyde heard all the noise outside and decided to go check it out. When he got to the city, everyone was pretty much gone. But he saw Ayla on the ground holding her stomach. As she stands up and removes her hands, blood pours out.

Nothing could change the situation. Ayla collapsed to the floor and was gone. Clyde’s body was in shock and he couldn’t move. His mind was blank. His best friend was gone and he had abandoned her.

Service men came and took the body away. Everything was cleaned up as if nothing had happened. A message was sent out to everyone in the town stating that ayla had a mental illness and everything that happened was all a miss understanding.

The world carried on.
