The Wizard of Gauze

She could see the dark, deep red splatters scattered like a scarlet trail on the floor- red on white; her very first Christmas candy cane. The girl bent down to write her name in the pretty liquid. She started at her reflection in a pool, giggling softly as the light dappled in the magnificent puddle. She glanced at her other hand, puzzled by the jagged knife she clutched in her pale palm. How strange, she thought, as she never had liked knives at all, and besides, she wasn’t allowed to use them. Running her swollen fingers along the blade, she smiled, and looked up to where she believed the sky might be. She began to follow the trail, feeling just a bit like Dorothy, and came to a man sleeping. How odd, as she noticed he didn’t look too comfortable. Quietly, so as not to disturb him, the girl started to peer down curiously at his face, noticing a long tear in his skin. Beautiful, she mused. Suddenly, a woman sauntered in. “Destiny”, the nurse crooned impatiently, carrying a new straightjacket. “Have you gotten at the knives again?” she clucked.
