Spring Break

It was mid-March and the weather was so outrageously beautiful in the state of California. Sally and Josie were headed to the hotel from the airport after a long flight from Minnesota where they live year around.  Sally was tall, thin, and had a dark tone to her skin, with bright blue eyes and a smile no one could resist loving. Josie was bleached blonde, with a more firm body, and gorgeous seafoam green eyes. The girls were best friends though basically sisters and they were seniors in high school on their last spring break adventure before heading off to college.        As soon as they got to their hotel they were eager to put on their beach attire and head out to the ocean where they’d begin their vacation. It was the first time Sally and Josie had ever been on vacation alone without any parental supervision. Though they were a good match for each other because they each knew when and how to be responsible when needed. The girls made their way to the beach and went to where all of the people their age were located. It was near the pier and the view was so perfect it could have been a picture from a magazine. They had made their way into a crowd of people and went to the tiki bar to grab some water to refresh themselves after a long walk. After getting their water as soon as they turned, a group of boys and two girls were right in their personal space smiling. They mentioned how they had never seen them around before and if they wanted to play some beach volleyball and of course, they did, they were on the varsity volleyball team for their high school.
Not too long into the game, Sally started talking to a boy named Landon, she started to realize he was the most down to earth guy she had meant in a while. They began talking so much they started walking away from playing the volleyball and instead went to sit on the beach. After telling their life stories and learning everything they could about each other, Landon asked Sally if she had ever surfed before. Quick to answer, Sally mentioned she had actually never even touched a surfboard. Immediately Landon felt it was his duty to teach her now, he knew it was a great opportunity to spend some time with her. Sally agreed to at least try, but she made no promises as to if she would actually be able to surf even after his skillful lessons.
It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they had just gotten into the water and started walking deeper into the ocean to start practicing. Landon had spent minutes explaining in detail and moving her body to show her exactly how to get a feel for surfing so she could do as well as possible on her first try. It was beginning to get late but Sally and Landon did not notice. Meanwhile, Josie had just finished playing beach volleyball and was so distracted during that whole time she had no idea where Sally was. Sally had just gotten on the board and was waiting for a wave to come so she could begin surfing, she could see one in the distance. Landon explained to her one more time what to do and let go, he mentioned he’d be watching closely just in case. The wave came and it was bigger than expected and it took sally by surprise. Landon had looked away for a few seconds because he had heard Josie yelling Sally’s name looking for her. Then Landon quickly turned back around and suddenly Sally was nowhere to be found though the surfboard was floating. He dove underwater and began swimming as fast as he could to find her and rescue her. He couldn’t help but keep thinking how this was his fault, he shouldn’t have suggested to surf on such a dangerous day. Suddenly he saw her gasping for air and he swam to her and grabbed her and quickly rescued her and got her onto the shore. Josie was there and was screaming wondering what he had done to her friend.
After a few minutes of CPR, Landon helped Sally to become conscious again. She was coughing up water while extremely dazed and confused. Josie was relieved, though extremely furious that she had not told her where she was or what she was doing. After crying for happiness that she was okay, she did not forget to lecture her for being irresponsible. They promised each other to never leave each other’s sides without telling where they are going and to always be aware of the dangers of what they are doing.
